I have a 1988 ford ranger with a 2.9L that I bought not running. It was getting good fuel pressure up to the schraeder valve, yet I could not smell gas while trying to flood it. I replaced the engines computer from autozone and it started running, but with the engine surging and for some reason the inertia switch kept kicking off the fuel pump. I am also getting about 8 miles to the gallon. I took it to a shop and they pulled five engine codes including M.A.P. sensor, throttle position sensor, and three other sensors relating to the fuel injection. The codes would not clear. He said the motor was not the original that was in the truck. I've tested the sensors and they were all fine except the O2 sensor which was melted at the coupling from being on the exhaust. I had it rewired. I had the CAT tested and it was fine. I am guessing I have the wrong computer, but have no way of knowing what the engine came out of. If I go to a junk yard and pull the computer and sensors out of a similar truck could that fix the code problem, or may it be in the harness or a relay?

I replaced the new computer I've gotten from Autozone with one from a junk yard for $17. I guessed right on that they gave me the wrong computer and the check engine light went off after a minute and I'm getting about 16 m.p.g.
