code reader malfunction???? Can't Post

apparently i forgot to hit the post message button
anyway i recently tried to scan a 1996 gmc pickup and kept coming up with vehicle not responding and yes the key was on i had even started the truck to make sure. my question is what would cause this to happen

the truck has 250,000 miles and has a 5.0 liter engine if that makes any difference

Check for power on pin 16 of the datalink connector. That would be the orange wire on the back of the connector. If you don't have power, check the aux power fuse 7 25amp in the IP fuse block.

If you have power, try a different scanner to rule out a problem with your equipment.

it would be nice if was rich enough to upgrade my scanner right now i can only go up to like 03 but would like to upgrade to a newer model of scanner but thats neither here nor there
i did however suggest he go to somewhere that would have a better scanner than what i have

idk if i can even get the programming updates for mine anymore i know i could about 4 or 5 years ago i hope i can its been a good scanner for me
and thank you for your feedback i appreciate it
gas engines on a regular basis is kinda new to me I'm used to working on trucks with anywhere from 500-800 horse engines

I'm not sure what type of scanner you are using, but you should at least have a generic OBDII mode that would work. Wouldn't pull much info than codes, but it would tell you if it will communicate. Even if you have a parts store try to scan it and they can't communicate that would confirm the trouble is in the vehicle and not the scanner. Try as DS said and look for power at pin 16.
