best tool for weekend warrior mechanic

I have a 96 chevy 1500 pickup and 2010 Toyota Sequoia. I am interested in buying a reader/scanner to help with problems/maintenance. i do all of the work and maintenance on both vehicles. Can you give me some advice on a good unit. I am not sure if i need live data or not. Looking at Actron 9550 or 9575. What is your opinion on Actron and these 2 units. Any advice (or criticism) is welcome.
