Hi,
I have a 51 plate Clio Authentique 8v 1.2. It has done about 72K miles but I've only had it since February.

It had been perfect up to a couple of moths ago. One day I was driving and I got the "electrical fault" warning light. The car lost power, I was accelerating, my foot to the floor but it wouldn't go any faster than about 15-20mph. I pulled to the side of the road, put my hazards on, turned the engine on and off and then the revs started going up and down themselves so i could not drive it again. About 15 minutes later it was fine. The car was then fine for a couple of weeks...then it started happening more often and more often. Sometimes when the light came on and I pulled over to the side of the road and turned it off then on again, it would be fine. Other times the revs would go up and down themselves and I had to wait until it decided to act "normal" again to drive it. Usually ended up abandoning it and getting bus to whereever I was going.

It's been to 3 different folk.
On the diagnostic thing it got the errors:
PO12O tps pedal position censor a circuit malfunction
PO141 oxygen sensor heater circuit malfunction Bank 1 sensor 2

It's had a new crank shaft sensor and new temperature gauge. It's had the throttle body and all the emulsified oil etc cleaned out. The ECU thingy has been checked for any dodgy wires and sprayed with stuff (can you tell I don't know much about cars? :P)

However, the problem has got SO bad that I haven't driven the car for over 3 weeks. You turn it on and it just starts revving up and down by itself (foot not on accelerator or anything). My mate's dad thinks it needs a new throttle body so he's taken that off the car to try and get a new second hand one, but cannot get the part any where?! He's tried various scrappies, ebay etc but with no luck. Every other one seems to be completely different to the one that's on my car? Apparently it's about £300-£400 for this part new?
Do you think it IS the throttle body?

I'm at my wit's end. I'm a poor student and cannot afford to get a new car, or £400 for a part that probably won't even fix it. I only passed my test in September and it's been a nightmare. I haven't declared it off the road yet so I'm still paying a fortune in insurance for it to just sit in my drive.

Please please please help?

I've read a LOT of posts online about clios and their various problems. It doesn't look like it is uncommon, especially with this model. However, there doesn't seem to be many "fixes" or ideas what is wrong with it. I've read so many posts when people have taken them to the Renault garage and replaced various of parts costing £100s and even £1000s of pounds and it's still not fixed it.

I read a few posts online with people who had similar symptoms and said they had had their engine wire harness replaced and that had fixed the problem. Does it sound like this could be the wire harness? Is this more likely than the throttle body? I've read so many posts saying that the throttle body didn't fix their problem,I'm really not convinced it will work. How much is a wire harness?

I've also found a couple of more posts saying it could be the coils?

It's driving me crazy! Pleaseeeee help if you can

In short your quote in all that ">>It's had the throttle body and all the emulsified oil etc cleaned out.<<"

Is this to say you had oil and engine coolant mixed and just cleaned out? That's not a fix if so but suggests blown gaskets or cracked engine parts. Yes that if so could be expensive.

Any overheating leading up to this?

Thanks for your reply.
Since I don't know much about cars I'm not sure haha. I don't think anything was wrongly mixed. He opened up the bonnet and the throttle body was filled with sludge which he cleaned. There was another part... he took the "lid" off it and it was full of emulsified oil which he gave a good clean but it made no difference.

Sorry for not being very clear :(

It's never overheated or anything else before the revving problem.

I don't know this car as they aren't sold here so no clue on engine layout. I searched the word "emulsified" and one showed oil and water being mixed such that they wouldn't separate again which can happen in an engine for whatever reason either plain water somehow was introduced or the coolant/antifreeze getting in the wrong places for an assortment of reasons -

Most if that's what you meant would be gasket problems or possibly cracks in parts that keep coolant/antifreeze away from engine oil if so. Cleaning it out only unless somehow moisture water got in at best would be some kind of short term patch.

You mentioned fairly serious "sludge" in the wrong places so a reason needs to be diagnosed if not plain neglect.

Once engine isn't running properly the code reading may be misleading vs finding why something physically seen is like that.

You've already had some techs look at this in person and can't be sure so I sure can't.

Best I can suggest is a higher end diagnosis of what it causing what with this and what it will likely cost to fix once and for all,

T
