VW Passat Emmissions warning light. HELP! Sign In

Hi all, we have a 2006 VW passat 1.8 diesel.

A couple of weeks ago our emissions light came on. It came on while we were in a ferry so when we got back a mechanic did a diagnostic. Couldn't find anything so switched the light off. The next day it came back on, took it for another diagnostic, again found nothing, and switched it off. Yep, you guessed it, it came back on!

There is no problems with the car otherwise, it all runs fine, no loss of power, nothing at all. My questions is, what do we do now?! Take it somewhere else for another diagnostic test?? I spoke to VW this morning, and they want a lovely £116 just to do the diagnostic on it.

Is it okay to leave the light on for a bit? It's not flashing, just steady. I'm hoping i could deal with it the middle of next month as finances this month are too stretched, and even the VW diagnostic fee is too much right now. I've read a bit about the EGR valve, so wonder if it's that, but the more i read, the more i see could be wrong with it. Have only just finished paying the bill for the new clutch the damn thing needed last!!!

can anyone shed any light on what it could be?! The garages that have done diagnostics have never given me any codes or anything like that, so i have no technical things to help out. Thanks all!

EDIT: The garage have now given me the last code: 16785 - P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirc.Flow Insufficient Detected

The code indicates the EGR system is not working properly and that is not something that you want to ignore for too long because it will cause high combustion temperatures.

Thanks! Am I best off paying to get the valve cleaned first and see if that fixes it, or just get a straight replacement? Any ideas on cost for cleaning and replacement?

I wouldn't assume either of those things will solve your problem. Nothing is telling you that the valve is the source of the issue. It needs to be diagnosed properly to find the actual cause.

Ah, okay. I assumed the diagnostic test we paid for (that gave us the code!) would tell us what needed fixing. So we do we need to get now from a garage?

The code merely tells you what system has a problem. The technician needs to figure out why.
