Knock Sensor Code - Check Engine Light - 2002 Honda CRV Sign In

Hi experts,

I need your help. I have bought Honda CRV 2002 5 days ago. The owner said that everything is fine. When I took test drive, the car was heated up as it has been driven for some time and there was no check engine light on.

The check engine light is coming on and off. I took it to mechanic when there was no check engine light and he said it is knock sensor code. He cleared the code and told me to come back to him when the light is on. The driving is fine and the car runs smooth even if the sensor shows up.

Details:

When I start my car in the morning, after driving around 0.5 km, the check engine light comes up and stays on until I reach office after driving around 10 km (Car is heated up). If I restart the car immediately, no engine light. If I keep driving, the light does not come back. However, if it is parked for 2 hours, it cools down and if I drive then, the light again appears after driving 0.5 km.

I have done minor service recently with oil change.

What could be the reason from the following? Please advise.

Faulty knock sesnor?

Low octane fuel?

or something else

Regards,
Zubair

Best Regards,
Zubair Khalid

You most likely have a bad knock sensor if the wiring to it doesn't have a problem.

when you start vehicle after letting it sit - are ther any ticking- knocking sounds? exhaust leaks something the sensor perceives as a knock? Oil pressure is not showing low at first start?

Just some FYI, if the knock sensor detects a noise (knock) within the specified frequency range, the PCM won't set a knock sensor code. The knock sensor code only shows up when there is a problem in the knock sensor circuit. When knock is present and detected, the reaction by the PCM is to retard ignition timing only.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Many thanks to all for their feedback.

There is no knocking sound apparently. No exhaust leaks. The engine is running smoothly. The check engine light does not show up on start. It appears after driving around 0.5-1 km.

So, its knock sensor circuit problem and not a faulty knock sensor? Is it possible if the sensor is detecting in the wrong frequency range and asking PCM to correct the code, which PCM cannot.

Question: The engine light stays on if I keep driving say 30-40 km. But when I turn off the car and turn on again after driving around 10 km, the engine light does not appear at all. Does it restart the check cycle with the start of the car?

The knock sensor is part of the knock sensor circuit.

Thanks.

Why does the light disappear after driving 10-12 km and restarting the car?

Is it possible if the problem is the low octane fuel?

At the moment, engine is running on Shell E10 fuel (Octane rating 94). Should I try some octane booster to see if it helps?

You have already been told that the sensor will not set a code because of anything it detected. The computed has determined the circuit is not functional, at least at the time the light was on.

Re: Knock Sensor Code - Check Engine Light - 2002 Honda CRV Sign In

Thanks again...

I shall be grateful if you kindly also clarify the point:

Why is there no engine light when I restart the car after driving 10-12 km? The light does not appear again even if I keep driving the whole day. However, if I take a break of around 2 hours and start driving again, the light appears again.

From my previous post:

Thats the magic, splendor and wonder of an intermittent problem. They dont have to make sense... It could be temperature related or it could be something off the wall. Never know until you isolate the problem.

Different codes display in different ways, depending on the programming. Some only illuminate the light during the current key cycle and only comes back on when the code triggers again. Some codes are programmed to light the light only after seeing the problem twice.
