Sign In i have a 2007 mercury grand marquis that stopped going into gear. I drove it to work and it was fine, when i tried to leave it will shift out of park. Tad new for me to have checked one out yet. Most vehicles use the brake light switch as the trigger to allow shifting out of park. Check that brake lights work at all. If not check the fuse. Could be an adustment problem at the switch if intermittent and fuse checks good. Isn't this vehicle still under warranty? Sign In I'm not one to argue with any mechanic, but doesn't the nuetral safety switch prevent the car from going into gear unless the foot is pressing the brake? There is a mechanical button (in my car) by the brake pedal, and then a relay, fuse, and then an electrical hookup to the trans. I'm currently having a similiar problem myself and this is what I'm staring at. Sign In A classic neutral safety switch is so that the starter won't engage while in anything but Park or Neutral in automatics and standards use a switch at the clutch pedal to allow the starter motor to engage. This "stuck in park" thing is detecting that the brake pedal is applied before it will move out of park in automatics. Usually they are sensing the brake lights but could be a separate way but still thru the brake pedal and then a electrical switch releases the mechanism that has locked it in park. That could fail also but more are from the brake light switch in my experience. Some cars have an override for this and some don't. Standard shifts do assorted tricks. Some didn't let you remove your key unless you were in reverse if I recall.
