will not read obd2 codes

 i want to purchase a 2000 silverado 2wd v-6 70,000 miles but the service engine light is on. runs great. when i plug in scanner it will not read nor power up scanner. tried multiple scanners. i ran into the same problem
working with autozone on multible different autos. any ideas
