what could it possibly be? Sign In

hello
on monday, i took my husband's truck to the local garage (that he has been going to for over 20 years) to have it filled with freon. when they told me to crank it up, i did. the air blew cold, the radio went on and all of the lights were working. only thing was that the engine didn't start. not only didn't it start, but it didn't even crank. it was as if i had only turned the key once to the accessory spot. our mechanic was able to start the truck under the hood connecting some wires. we haven't heard back from him this week, so we're guessing that he hasn't a clue as to the problem. the only thing that we can figure is that he accidentally tripped something with the alarm (which we disconnected a long time ago because it kept going off). if it matters, it is a 1990 toyota landcruiser.
thanks so much for any help!

Great time for a problem!!! I guess these things tend to happen at the worst times for everyone.

It sounds alot like the neutral start switch decided to wave goodbye. I am assuming here that the truck is an automatic transmission? If so, the neutral safety switch (neutral start switch) is the most likely culprit.

However the first thing I would check would be the fuse in the fuse block labeled: IGN
it is a 7.5amp fuse-should be a brownish color.

these are really the only things that are factory installed on this vehicle that would affect the starter.

it is possible that an aftermarket alarm would affect it but the mechanic that added freon would have had to re-connect some wire(s) that you say were disconnected long ago.

Check the fuses (all of them) first; then go for the neutral safety switch.

hope it ends up being the fuse!!! rick

Just an added note....could be that the ignition switch itself has failed...rare to happen like that but it does happen Tongue

It could be either one, but more than likely I would suspect the switch too.
