turn signal fuse pops with main PWR applied Sign In

I have a 1993 Chevy Silverado step-side V-6 with about 190,000 miles. My issue is that the turn signal fuse blows everytime that the truck is started. The emergency flashers will work while engine is running. The turn signal will work as long as the ignition is NOT turned to the "ON" position. All other electrical items work as advertised. I have disconnected everything that goes into the steering column (thinking it may be the turn switch) the fuse still blows. I disconnected the wire harness running from the firewall inside the engine bay to the rear of the truck. Fuse still blows .Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How is that even possible. The turn signals are powered through the ignition.

You tell me. I can't figuire out where to even start. UNLESS it is the ignition switch itself. The signal wills work in AUX, but as soon as the key is turned to ON, the fuse blows.

I don't question that you have a short in the circuit that has to be found. I question your statement that the turn signals work without the key, not possible.

I am in the truck now. With the key in ignition and turned to the ON position, the.signals work as advertised. However, as soon as I start the truck, the fuse blows.

Well, that is different from what you said the first time.

You need to look for what is activating when you start it.

The following things are also on that circuit.

Back up lights
Cab chassis rear lamps
Trailer/cable harness

Try unplugging the turn signal switch and see if it still blows the fuse.

Re: turn signal fuse pops with main PWR applied Sign In

I think that I have found my problem. I had a babydoll head covering the ball for the trailer hitch. I had removed her eyes and put a blue LED in each eye that would activate with the brakes and turn signals. (I know, I am a sick individual) I removed her head and disconnected the LEDs. I started the truck and so far the fuse has survived. Who would have thought that two small 12 volt LEDs would cause such a problem.

They will if they are shorting the signal to ground.

Fuse still blows. I think the short has got to be between the fuse block and switch. If it was on the up side of the fuse, would it not be like battery straight to ground?

Don't bet on that. The short can be anywhere in the circuit or any of the other circuits fed by that fuse and the fact that it only blows with the engine running and not when the key is just turned on means it's something that energized at that time.
