toyota hi ace alternator probs

have 89 Toyota Hi Ace petrol van with 2 ltr engine,
Alternator had, had it fitted new one, yet charging light stays on still,? engine seems to have a bit of pre ignition when turned off also.
Can anyone help]

Don't know this vehicle for diddle but no matter. Old alternator should have been tested and might have been fine. If this has fusible links to alternator or poor connections (melted) things like that could be the issue. It may (just can't know) have a separate voltage regulator or bad luck with the replacement alternator.
Charging system needs to be fully checked out including belt tension is proper, battery terminals and the cable ends at starter and engine block too all known good or things go crazy,

Thanks for reply Tom, the old alternator was completely had it, was tested by an Auto Electrician, but I will try some of the things you have suggested
