My 1987 rv has a chevy 454 big block. while driving down the freeway we heard a pop and then the starter howled and the engine would not shut off even after I disconnected the battery. I put in a new starter and checked the solenoid. when i connected the neg batt cable the new starter engaged. also tried new ignition switch ...same problem. checked for shorts but can't find any....frustrated...

You have the wiring diagram for the starting system on that? You have power on the small starter solenoid wire when you plug the battery in? You have to trace that circuit back till you find the short to a power point. It may have a starter relay incorporated into the circuit somewhere, but that is hard to be sure since a lot of RVs have aftermarket wiring systems.
