short circuit on my 95 saturn power locks Sign In

The other day the power locks on my 95' saturn stopped working. When i flipped the switch on the inside it just clicked. I checked the fuse and found it was blown. I bought a new fuse inserted it and it sparked and blew. I used a 25 and a 30 with the same problem. How can i fix this short circuit? Where should i start? I do not have the money to pay an auto mechanic to fix this problem for me. I have the time and the money to buy the materials that i need please help.

Re: short circuit on my 95 saturn power locks Sign In

Looking at the wiring diagram for this system there are two fuses for the locks. A 10amp labeled Body & a 20amp labeled Door Locks. With you saying that you can hear a click, the 10 amp is likely ok but check it anyway.
The 20amp fuse also powers the cigarette lighter and that’s where I would go first. Make sure that nothing has fallen in, like a coin or anything else metal. Try a new fuse with the lighter element or whatever you may have plugged into the lighter housing removed. If the use still blows, remove the wire connector (orange wire) at the back of the lighter housing and try another fuse.
Don’t be using the higher amp fuses that you mentioned; if you do there’s a good chance of burning up some wiring; not a good thing to do.
Let us know if that’s where the problem is?

Cigarette/Cigar Lighters/Power Ports, 12v Sign In

A note on cigarette lighters: (First called "cigar lighters") Silly but best not to use them to light a cigarette!?!? Ones meant to be lighters have a different base inside to grab the lighter and get hot. Power ports don't have that. It's screwed up as they all look the same at a glance but are not. The wrong lighter can cause problems or a lighter that has been used some can short out easily. Best to use these as just power ports and cover them with something or a dummy plug when not in use that is non conductive but keeps junk out of the socket. With these things now being removed all the time to plug in devices the original lighter even as a plug frequently gets lost.

These things have been in cars since electricity but they are not all the same except that the basic size works for the gazillion things that can plug into them for 12v power. Center of the bottom of socket is 12v + and side walls are 12v - in everything I know since Model Year 1957 when 12v/ neg ground became universal to automobiles,

Re: short circuit on my 95 saturn power locks Sign In

I guess I didn’t make myself understood in my last post. If the fuse for the power locks has burnt out the cigarette light will also not work because the power locks and the cigarette lighter use the same fuse.
All I was saying is that the lighter is a problematic thing with the housing (socket) shorting out; either with crap falling in or like what Tom has said; the housing becomes damage because of things, like phone chargers or whatever being stuffed into them.
Like I asked before, unplug the wires at the back of the lighter, replace the fuse and see if the locks will work again?
