on a dodge stratus 98 drivers side window got to hit the door eal hard to get it too go up and down

It's probably the motor itself with brushes such that the jolt like whacking a starter can make it work again does.
Shade tree test: When not working turn on a dome light key on so windows should work engine off. Choose UP/Down for that window and if light dims and window doesn't respond it's taking current but not letting window move. Just a trick to see that power is getting to it but it won't move. If light doesn't dim it probably isn't getting current and could be several things but a common one is a wire in door jam that bends all the time as door is opened and closed is giving out and if that you follow the power to see if it gets thru,
