I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Flare-side. The remote entry only seems to work when the door is open and I point it directly at the dash. I have replaced the batteries in the remote.

Re: power door locks Sign In

One misconception about keyless entry remotes is the range is affected by battery age in the transmitter. Range is actually determined by the receiver under the dash.

If you have another remote, does it do the same?
You have any aftermarket equipment installed?
Does it do this no matter what the location of the vehicle is at?

Both remotes do the same thing. No aftermarket equipment. Originally would happen only after sitting in the sun. Now happens all the time.

The RKE receiver is inside the central security module (CSM). The receiver might be faulty causing loss of signal range. To get to the CSM you have to remove the passenger's side air bag module. Since it requires working with the air bag system, you should have a qualified tech or shop check it out.

A new CSM would have to be programed by the dealer anyways wouldn't it?
