So I figured it wasn't the alternator. I took her to get a new battery and they said a relay is clicking but they thought it may have been because the battery was so low. She drove it and again it wouldn't turnover, the new battery was dead. Again after a jump it ran until turned off. I just checked it and the relay that is clicking is called ASD relay. I jumped started it and the relay did not click until I turned off the engine. I quickly tried starting it without the jumpers and it started but the relay clicked. It is very loud fast clicking. What is this ASD and could it be the cause? Is it or what ever it connects to the reason the battery is draining? If not can you help. The battery that was replaced was old and probably on the way out anyway but she doesn't have the money to keep throwing into it so these mechanics can troubleshoot at her expense. Then start the car and check the output voltage while idling and again with some items on like headlight, blower, RWD and read again and once more with a raised idle. Voltage while running should read about 13.5-14.5 and be fairly steady. If lower than 13v it isn't charging the battery enough and would go dead again. Then I would have the alternator tested as I'm pretty sure the voltage regulator is inside this alternator so you get both if replaced when if determined bad. Note: When a car is stone dead from something like leaving lights on the quick jump may get it going but works the alternator VERY hard and can burn it out. Always best to leave both cars running and charging for an annoying 15 min or more or charge the battery separately. As for the ASD (Auto Shut Down) relay clicking; I’m not sure why but as Tom said; have the battery fully charged and tested, before going any further. Low battery voltage will cause all kinds of electronic hick-ups. Dan.
