my 1999 Z24 Cavalier brights arent working Sign In

Hi, i have a 1999 Chevy Cavalier Z24, with a 2.4L Twin Cam and i bought it a few months ago for $350 in decent shape, with under 95,000 miles with a few aftermarket parts. Ever since i got it, i would turn the headlight switch on, and even if the dims are on, the brights light will turn on, on the dash. And when i turn my brights on, the brights light stays on, on the dash, but then my headlights shut off completely. so all that works are my dims. i tried changing bulbs, that didn't work. i tried changing fuses, relays, and that didn't work. Any help?

Cavilers & Sunfires had an on going issue with the headlight wiring inside the harness. Splice connections would rot from lack of proper insulation and would become disconnected and or shorted together.
90% of the time you’ll find this corroded splice inside the wiring harness that runs along the left inner fender and then tucks up under the battery.
So yea lets connect two or three wires together (splice) wrap a little bit of tape around it and run it close to the biggest corrosion generator under the hood, the battery; thanks GM for thinking this through so well. LOL
I would begin this by removing the battery and battery tray to gain access to the wiring harness. Open up the harness and follow the wires from the back of the left (driver’s side) headlight; until you find the likely corroded wires.
I’d be shocked if you didn’t find any.

OK I'll definitely do that next. no brights, sucks! also, on my heater control, there are 4 fan speeds. and the only one that works is "high". is it my fan going out, or is that the switch? i tried swapping switches from a 1996 standard cavalier because the switches looked almost the same, and that didn't change anything. I'm not sure if its my fan, or if I'm going to have to replace the whole heater controls. any idea what that means?

It’s likely the blower motor resistor/high speed relay assembly that needs replacing. You’ll find it bolted to the heater box beside the blower motor, under the passenger side of the dash.
Very very common problem.
Here a diagram showing both the motor and resistor assembly.
Most all aftermarket parts store will have the piece.

i took the battery out, front bumper off for more access, and popped the headlights out. i took all the tape off of the wires going under the battery, all the way to the headlights. i did find a few corroded wires, and replaced them, and also, it looked like there has been work done to the wiring under there already. but after i replaced the wires, the brights still didn't work. somone told me it may be the switch on the steering column. i cannot figure this out, and i wonder how much it would cost for a shop to find the problem and fix it. any more possible ideas it could be?

Yea you may need to go in and have someone with the understanding of how all the different components of this system are intended to work; check it for you?
Here’s a list of the rest of the “could be” things that might be causing the problem.
Corroded wiring, poor connections (power & ground), daytime running light relay, multi function switch (headlight & dimmer combination switch), fog lamp switch, fog lamp relay, fog lamp cut off relay, and instrument cluster all have to be functioning as intended for the system to work; they are all inter-connected.
Plus I’ve likely missed a few things and you may be wondering why I would say instrument cluster. The cluster is actually a control module (computer) in itself; that controls the day time running lights, via dimmer switch inputs to the cluster which in-turn the cluster controls the day time running light relay.
Sorry I wasn’t of much help on this one; but as you’ve likely already felt some frustration with this issue; me throwing out more off the wall suggestions, will just increase this frustration.

hey, thanks for letting me know what was wrong with my heater blower resister. it worked! also, right under the battery on my cavalier, thats where there is a plug-in so you can unplug the headlight, blinkers, ect, and i was wondering if the wiring for my 1999 cavalier z24 would be the same as a 1996 Grand Am GT?
