lights dim & get brighter but still running. Sign In

I'm dealing with a 1998 Chevy Cavalier with 155000+ miles. Don't know the engine size, all I know it's a 4 cylinder
I noticed headlights and instrument panel lights dimming and getting brigher on my daughter's vehicle. I don't drive it often and didn't know about problem have had this vehicle for 6 years and have had minimal problems with it. Have had new alternator put on two years ago and a new battery put in last summer. Would like to get this problem solved as my 18yr old daughter drives vehicle, we live in the sticks I am new to the area where I live and am not in the mood to be raped by any local mechanics. Many thanks for any assistance you can lend

Why do you immediately think you'll have a problem with a local mechanic?

Start with making sure the belt is tight and for goodness sakes witness this so you can tell more about exactly when this occurs,

Thank you for your response. I will follow your advice and hopefully my problem will be solved.
You ask why I have the idea I will have a problem with local mechanic, well I have had too many been there did that situations. Just being a woman walking into an auto repair shop is a bit intimidating compound that with the fact that I am a woman from Pennsylvania living in Alabama and the second I open my mouth they know I'm "not from around here" it seems they see that as a license to take advantage.
I apologize to all honest mechanic, as I know there must be some out there. I did not mean to offend anyone.

OK: At a glance of the symptoms if this "dimming" of lighting follows the speed of the engine then the belt tension is highly suspect. These use a spring loaded tensioner and if belt is stretched to the limit of "self" adjustment is will begin to slip - just a possibility. That wouldn't be a big deal as things go.

Battery status is always important. They don't age well - LOL neither have I! Keep reciepts on those and know how old they are. They usually do behave for a few years and the rate of failures increases dramatically along with it's original ability just isn't there.

About the trade:

It's unfortunate that it seems the trade and its shops, techs get a bad rap for their work. Without doubt some or even a lot deserve a bad rating and it should be brought up to that person or place not unlike any other service industry out there.

I can't think of any reason why it needs to be genderized at all - admittedly it is somewhat.

Techs here are all volunteers not looking to get anything out of you if that helps with the belief that "we" are not all out to get youWink

Good luck with the fix,

T
