Everything is exactly the same except for 1 wired slot is gone on the 97 board and on the 98 it's there(could be a ground?)It's to control the defroster part/the AC works fine. You mean front window defroster - right? As said guessing but when defrost is selected A/C is enabled on most cars with factory A/C. At moderate temps but not totally freezing compressor would kick on for a bit. The intent is it could removed some moisture which about can't be too important as A/C can't work to defrost at very cold temps but more to allow compressor to cycle or come on to circulate oils - plain exercising it in off season. Can only guess. Did, do both cars have same equipment and dash styles? RWD - does it work? I find most just send power to them and are grounded at the rear window on one side. All go thru a timer and shut down device such that if it's on it will shut off and not come back on if you so much as restart the car. RWD is a huge power drain so they design them to go off for air heads like me who'd leave it on forever. Two ways to know if that works since you believe that's what the slot is for is when window is clear you can blow on it after it's on for a minute and like fogging up eyeglasses to clean them it will show which lines are working. Other is take a plain test light to the grids (BE CAREFUL AS THEY ARE ON THE GLASS NOT IN IT AND CAN BE BROKEN!) or to the plug usually driver's side is positive. That outlet with nothing there could be for an annoying dash light to say it's on where one model didn't have it. If one model from donor part didn't have a RWD (most do but some really don't) it can be wired up separately. They sell lighted toggle switches and even ones that will shut off for aftermarket RWDs which I've installed and won't again with the sticky grids that aftermarket look like sh*t! Another time I'll get the wiring kit and get a whole window with OE grids already there. If you are part way to putting dash back together but have or can plug everything in make sure all the controls work for that new/used control head. Look or cover to see that it lights with headlights too! What a pill if that was for lighting. Right now - I don't dare suggest adding ground or power without more info on exactly what that is.
