Just how do you know the battery is draining "right in front of your face?"

No matter for the moment. You could isolate a strong drain by putting a test light between disconnected negative battery cable and the post. If a drain the test light will light.

Unplug hood light if applicable. Now pull fuses one by one (interior light must be disabled) till light shuts off and that's the circuit to chase down,

i tried what you suggested and found 2 shorts leading to the fuse box, but with a voltmeter the battery is stable unplugged but connected the battery goes from 12v to about 5v in minutes

Perhaps I'm not understanding what is or has transpired to get to this. Changed battery was mentioned - new or just a different one? Known charged or not?

Any good, charged battery that drops voltage to 5v as checked at posts (not the clamps) has a very serious drain that would probably be smoking hot or burned up wires by now.

You said you found "shorts" going to fuse box. What does that mean - bare wire, melted, wires touching that shouldn't?
