1996 Dodge Grand 3.8ltr V8 90,000miles... Speedo,Tack,Heat, gas & Odometer guages will not function after 9 months of hot (carport) storage in Texas.
tested all fuses with test lite, new battery, battery was removed last year. all guages worked fine last year. Engine and everything else works fine. starts good and drives good. all lites work. alternator fine.

Probably a bad dash cluster but the wiring would need to be tested to confirm that.

If this were any other model I'd go for that explanation, but I used to service a fleet of Caravans all from 96-01 models. The clusters are terrible but have a pattern failure to them. They like to fail all gauges at once from a capacitor in the printed circuit board. Is this locked into second gear? Do you have access to a scan tool? If so look for the road speed data pid and see if you get response from it. If not, you likely need a new output shaft speed sensor which is rather simple to change and in the $60 price range.

As HT mentioned, anything would need testing to confirm it. Nobody here will recommend you throw parts at things. This is simply a pattern failure I saw many instances of with these vehicles.

So, you are saying that a bad VSS will take out the temp gauge, gas gauge and tach before the truck moves?

Another suggestion would be taking a look at the BCM (body control module) if all gauges are out and you have power, ground, and communications at the instrument cluster. You'll need to take it to a repair shop that can access the BCM to see if it is alive and to test inputs and outputs.

Quote
The Instrument Cluster located on the left side of the instrument panel, provides the operator with gauges and warning lamps indicating vehicle operation. All gauges. regardless of engine type, are driven by the CCD Bus from the Body Control Module (BCM).

My bad, guess I read too fast and paid too much attention to the headline. Yep, sounds like a junk cluster. There is a capacitor in the circuit board that goes and does this. Ran into a mad scientist type of electronic guy who showed it to me. The capacitor is about 1.50 but you have to know how to desolder and resolder the new one into the circuit board. New board is over $300. Forget used, tried that and they just won't last more than a month or two.
