dashboard display stays on after ignition turned off

Hello, I have a Nissan Primera hatchback (w) reg '93 1.6L fuel injection. I got in the car yesterday, turned the ignition key, and nothing, no attempt to start, no dashboard display, nothing!. The battery was totally dead. I realized something must have shorted out, or stayed on overnight to do this so; I took out the battery, put it on charge overnight, stuck it back in the car the next day, fully expecting the car to fire up and I'd then start looking for the short cct by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery, connecting a multimeter between the positive (attached lead) and the unatached negative lead and expecting a drain of any more than 25mA to indicate a short, and then start pulling fuses until I found the one that stopped the battery drain. But, this time, I turned the key and 'chug chug chug', it tried to start but did'nt quite catch, i did'nt think that much of this, as a few days before I had a few intermittent starting troubles and found the distributor cap carbon rods to be quite worn so I put it down to that, I turned off the engine and then, the cause of the flat battery revealed itself to me, with the ignition turned fully to the off position I still had a lit up dashboard display. Now I don't mind pulling the fuse on a dodgy cigarette lighter or glove compartment light and doing without it, but I draw the line at disconnecting the car battery every time I stop the damn car, so Im going to have to fix it! - - any ideas ???

Hi, Out of all that what I'm seeing is that a fully charged battery with a charger didn't behave and that's issue #1. Battery may not be able to hold a charge or connection problems. Bet is the battery self shorts and has had it - a guess. Another maybe is the residual lit up things on dash display may be intentional for a momentary time when all is off and should shut off but are confused with a lousy battery in there now. Begin with a battery and its connections that will clearly crank and start the car and see if problem solves itself from there - it may, T _________________________________________ Tom Greenleaf - MetroWest, Boston http://acsource.net/acforum/index.php
