coil is arching Sign In

I have a 1986 Chevy GMC,motor size 350.I have replaced plugs,wires,rotor,cap,module,and coil.When I start up the coil
archs and takes the module out.Can anyone help me figure out
what I should do to fix this problem? Thanks,Larry

Not sure how you figured that out with the coil in the cap but probably would just replace it and the cap and rotor, T OOPS - somehow didn't see that you had replaced cap and rotorCrazy

From here I would check the distrutor's shaft bearings. I'ts never happened to me on the HEI but if it can wobble around a lot it might be able to make erratic sparks. I haven't found a local rebuilder for one I need done in a 1948 tractor and haven't asked yet if I can just get one rebuilt.

For the Chev HEI they probably aren' t that expensive anymore. Good luck, T

Is the grounding rang still in the cap? Sounds like the system is looking for a ground and is grounding through the shaft.

Sounds like way2old hit the nail on the head. When you remove the coil, there should be a round rubber gasket with a metal rod and spring under it. If it is there replace the rubber gasket. Also, there should be a ground clip under the coil that plugs into the connector at the distributor. If it is gone, replace that also. The only other thing I can see is maybe a faulty ignition coil insulator housing. If that's the case, try another brand coil. Preferably a Delco.
