car won't start Sign In

i have a 91 ford escort lx,
it recently hasn't been starting proper, it would just not start then after awhile it would..
then last time i tried, the ignition felt like it was locked, lik when your steering wheel locks..
then i got it, and turned it but my car didn't start.
all of the inside lights, like the warning lights that come on when your ignition is partly on, stayed on even when the ignition was COMPLETELY off.
i tried turning it on and off about ten times and it still wouldnt start or turn off the lights.
it makes no sound whatsoever when i turn the ignition, and it feels like it is unattatched...it doesnt like spring into place or anything..its hard to explain
my battery is fine, and alternator..its not dead, but i had to unconnect the negative terminal so it didn't kill my battery (the lights were still on)
i looked online and it said it might be ignition switch or a short somewhere?

There is a sliding rack gear that breaks in those steering columns and it will allow you to turn on but not off. It requires complete disassembley of the column to change so I wouldn't attempt it yourself.

It could get jammed up. It will have to be disassembled for inspection.
