brake lights only don't work

i have a 1995 chevy cheyenne pickup with air bags. brake lights only do not work all other lights work great does anyone know how the top half of the cover that surrounds the steering column comes off.

Check brake light switch where brake pedal swings underdash. Forget the column for now which shouldn't have anything to do with brake lights,

Does the 3rd (high mount) brake light work?

no 3rd brake light does not work. the switch on the pedal i have already replaced. that didn't help. I might have to replace the multi function switch at least that what someon suggested and that is in the steering column.

Don't replace the multifunction unless you get the high mount working and not the lowers. You need to check fuses and power in and out of the brake light switch.

You have tried new bulbs in the back to make sure you don't have 3 bulbs out????

Just a regular 12 volt test light

ok finally back to working on my truck. the third upper light goes on for a second and then goes out and does not come back on until i let the brake off and then push it down again then it goes on for a second again and goes out what should i try next?

Sounds like a bad brake light switch and a bad combination switch.

by combination switch do you mean multi function switch the one that has the turn signal lever on
