i have a 97 chev lumina. the brake lights don't work. or rather, the left works itermittantly, the right not at all. the 4 ways, left/right blinkers, and tail lights all work. i have checked fuses. i have checked visible wires for breaks/shorts. what and where should i begin troubleshooting? thanks in advance for the help...

Does the 3rd (high mount) brake light work all the time?

You likely have a bad turn signal switch which is built into the combo switch. You really need to check the output wires for those inoperative lights right at the Combo switch to be sure.

ok thank you, you are the second person to suggest this. my problem is how to access the switch. take the steering wheel off? it has an airbag and i don't want to go anywhere near it. how, or can the switch be removed without removing the wheel?

You should be able to replace that without pulling the wheel. It bolts to the side of the column. Just pull the covers off and you can see it clearly.

i just went and checked. there is a small plastic cover which i could remove to see the switch but i can't get at the the screws, any of them, with the wheel in place. had to turn the wheel all the way left just to shine a light in there to see.

Yeah, I just checked and this one is the old style so yes, the wheel and column have to come apart. The newer ones bolt to the side.
