I have a 2007 AWD Pontiac Torrent it has about 30000km on it,
I have had big problems with the battery dying. I am on my third battery, so about 10000K on a battery.
The dealer tells me i don't drive it enough, so it will not recharge, oh yeah, i live in saskatoon sk Canada, and it gets cold here, it is -45 with the windchill as i write this.
I bought a multimeter so i can see where my battery is so i can manually recharge it, (i am not happy about that, but what can i do?)
My question is can i test the battery but touching the multimeter leads to the positive remote terminal and then a grounded bolt or do i have to take off the cover thing off the battery every time i want to check it?
And what should it be reading
at -20 C what should the volts be for 100% charge
75% charge
50% charge

Car batteries need to be kept at 100% charge at all times for optimum performance. Your weather conditions put batteries under the most extreme demand they could ever see so they have to be at their very best to survive. If you're not driving the car every day, then you need to set up a trickle charger that will keep it at 100% charge at all times. Also make sure you are buying the highest capacity battery available for your vehicle. the demand is too high for anything less.
