battery or charging system? Sign In

Have a Mazda B2600i. Last 2 weeks, I had to charge the batter for 20 minutes before I can starts the truck. Drove for 10-15 minutes each time. Sat it for a day and the next morning it won't start. Charged again and it starts without problem. Took it the Les Schwab turned off the car. It wouldn't start unless from a jump. and they told me it was a bad battery. (9 years old) I was wondering, if I can charge the battery at home and it starts, why wouldn't starts again after drove it for 25 minutes? Is my alternator going bad too?

Personally I don't trust batteries much over 3 years old. 8 was an all time record for one that still worked at all. Bat has to go no matter what - it would be too old if never used and just on a trickle all this time on the shelf!

In it's failing it might have burned out your alternator so when new bat is in check for simple voltage output when running and check for a drain which was probably the old battery and won't be there now,

I agree. Try replacing the battery 1st. If the old battery wasnt charging properly off your ALT it would of worked its hardest to make it charge, therefore probably burning it out. But i would try changing to a new GEL CELL battery 1stly, and run your car for a while or go and do some errands to see if the ALT will charge. You probably wont know straight away, but do what Tom said and check the charge output of your ALT to make sure.
