battery charger/warning light came on

land rover discovery j reg 2.5 diesel
 } Today after I turned the engine off , and take the keys out the battery charger/warning light came on? also my rev counter has stopped working but when i start the engine the battery light went off

Usually when the battery /charge light stays on with the key off ,there is a fault internally in the alternator.
Light goes out on start up.
Have the alternator checked/replaced.
