Ford Windstar SEL speedometer Calibration Sign In

My Ford Windstar SEL 3L V6 has an issue with the speedometer

my car's speedometer gives about ~50% of the speed driving

on a trajec of 20.2 Km the Km indication (odometer) gave me only 10 Km

is this a calibration error that is simply resolved? or is intervention of a profesional mechanic required?

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Are we talking Speed and/or Distance? If both, likely a speed sensor problem. If just the odometer (distance) is inaccurate, probably the speedometer head is the problem.

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

its indeed Both the speedometer and the odometer that give 50% of the actual speed and distance

any details on where to find this particular part?

i'ff searched the net though not much that could help me on localizing the sensor

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Petrus; You probably should have this verified before throwing parts at it. Speed sensors aren't terribly expensive, but at this point we don't know if it's a wheel speed sensor in the rear diff. or one in the trans. Are you getting an ABS lamp illuminated? If so, it's more than likely it's the one in the differential, but just a guess. How about transmission shifting? Does it seem erratic? As the shift points are at different times than normal?

so can't tell you about the sounds it should or should not make ;)

but ill keep your information in mind and will tell you ASAP what and where.

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Petrus - Loren: Is there any chance this car has it's speedo and odometer set to miles and miles per hour rather than Kilometers? 20kmh is slow and would read about 10ish in MPH.

Remember 100KM = 62 Miles - distance or speed and all the fractions thereof accordingly. Just a thought?

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Have thougt of that aswell though over a distance of 20 Km i get 10 Km on the odometer..

But iff it is like that, is there a possebility to convert it back to Km by hand? or is that a componant replacement?

--

iff tried to see if there was a ABS Indicator luminated aswell though at startup of the car there nothing too see.
Might be a broken light.
so i checked the Bord computer system checkup didnt see ABS in there aswell.
might just not be in this version of my car.

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Petrus: You've only had the vehicle a few days. This is totally consistant with a so called "English" (non metric) vehicle being used in a Metric measured country.

What year is this Windstar? Ones sold to the US have speedos for both but for KMs in analog it's annoyingly smaller - the digital dash if equipped just needs to be switched - read owner's manual. The vehicle may only make permanant record in miles or kilometers and probably could only be reset by a dealer.

You are claiming about a 50% deviation in short checks which could be confused with 62% which would be right on the money as far as deviation. Tire wear and proper size would matter and could make a 5-10% flaw to confuse it too.

By the vehicle's VIN you should be able to find out what the original destination of the vehicle was intended for.

If the odometer is a physical wheel it really will only record in miles or KMs. Ask at a Ford dealer what you can do about that if that's the issue and you care to change it,

Re: speedometer Calibration Sign In

Sounds like a plan. If owner's manual has nothing to say I don't know either. If this is a digital dash readout there should be a buttom marked "E/M" meaning English or Metric and some you need to change languages too.

I didn't think many Windstars were sold directly to Europe on purpose. The US abuts Canada to the North of course and the whole country is Metric but also has provices that are dominantly French speaking and some vehicles will accomodate that too!

What probably happens is anytime the Van has been reset or perhaps battery disconnected it would probably default to the country of original destination when new - dunno for sure. Good luck with it anyway,
