Hello I currently have a 1993 Chevy Silverado V8 5.7 Liter thats a 2wd it has 178,*** miles. Today I attempted to start it and as I turned the key I saw white smoke come out of the steering collum and steering wheel. It also looked like it was coming out of the dash. Does anybody know what it could be?

Ah..........Umm?? That's not exactly "textbook" for any common issue I know of! Was there an electrical type smell, dust or recent something that could have led to this? Did the truck start and run properly? Any warning lights? T

Now - what to do about this? Just turning ign to run position is powering up several items in the column/dash - directionals, cruise, wipers and more. The horn and hazards have power all the time. The ignition switch should be lower down in the column from the key somewhat above where you feet would be. It's going to need some exploration to see (should be showing burned wire insulation at least) on something locally empowered by the key. What do you want or need to do? If with airbag I strongly suggest sending this out for proper fix. Can't say the source but would be looking at or near the ignition switch for trouble maybe even brake light switch. This is a first to me for the truck. With VIN ready you could ask a dealer if any TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) are out for this, T

That sounds like a bad ignition switch, assuming you didn't melt any wires. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

It cant be the ignition switch it has to be a wire. Ive been told its the wiring for the engine harness or one of my other wires.
