I'm thinking of adding a second alternator to my hilux, the original one wont supply the load I'm planning for it.
I can install a second one where the air con pump used to be however I'm wondering if the voltage regulators will fight each other and how to wire to avoid this.

spinergy; I think you are asking for some real problems, here. How about adding a second battery with an isolator? Would be much easier, much cheaper, and accomplish the same thing.

I already have a solenoid driven isolator and two 660cca batteries.
I'm pulling a Kilowatt when I'm running all my extras, I'd rather have a way of powering the electrics that doesn't rely on the battery's.

spinergy; A kilowatt???? What are you doing, powering a hospital? LOL...You need more specific advise than I can give. Sorry. Hopefully, one of the other guys in the forum may have suggestions.

Your trying to light up a city with a flashlight.
That car just wasn't engineered for that kind of current flow and no matter what you do, your going to overload something.

Not quite a hospital, I have 10 x 100w 4x4 lights hanging off various parts of the truck. Seems excessive I know but necessary for what I do.
Plus there is the 2500w inverter but I never pull more than 700-800w off it.
I have replaced all the wiring with 4 gauge so the current flow shouldn't be an issue.
By my maths I need 70A at 14.4V to run the lights for any length of time which the alternator can supply at full load. however it's not good to run an alternator at full load for more than a few minutes so if I add a second I can pull 35A from each which they should be happy to sustain.
This will cost me just under 3Hp in power but I can live with this.

Why not just a portable generator recharging the system to use when the load is on?

Hard to run safely when off road, plus more gear to lug around taking up space and seems kinda pointless carrying a generator that runs only when there is another engine already running

spinergy; We have several 'rebuilders' in the area. Have you checked into having an alternator 'built' for your purpose? As HT said, not sure the vehicle can handle all of that. But, I'm not an electrician.

Yea I was looking at doign that. I can get someone to wind a 200Amp one or buy a high output alternator and make a mount for it but I was hoping not to spend $1000nzd if I didnt have to. I know you can run two alternators togeather but you have to play some games with the regulators so stop them fighting each other. I was just wondering if you guys knew what I needed to do.

spinergy; Okay, bud, I got you figured out. You are running around the outback, at night, searching for Roos'. Right? LOL. We've got an old timer in the forum, but haven't seen him lately. Not sure if he's in NZ or with the convicts? LOL
You could try googling "DR.ELECTRICS" and see if you can find him? He's really sharp when it comes to auto electrics.
