Turn signal/cruise control unit replacement

Turn signal/cruise control unit replacement Sign In

I've got a 95 Chevy S10 LS Pickup, 4.3, 5 spd manual, w/tilt steering.
The blinker does not turn off when turning right. It does going left. The turn signal arm has a vague feel to it. I purchased a replacement turn signal/cruise/washer control unit and need to know if replacing it myself is viable. I did get the unit for the tilt steering column. There is an airbag in the steering wheel so I am a little reluctant to just dig in.
Question; What is the procedure for replacing this unit?

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
When servicing any components on the steering column, should any fasteners require replacement, be sure to use only nuts and bolts of the same size and grade as the original fasteners. Using screws that are too long could prevent the column from collapsing during a collision.

1994 Vehicles
See Figure 1
The following procedures require the use of a lockplate compressor tool such as J-23653 or equivalent.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Matchmark and remove the steering wheel. Please refer to the procedure earlier in this section for details.

  3. Remove the shaft lock cover.

  4. Push downward on the shaft lock assembly until the snapring is exposed using the shaft lock compressor tool.

  5. Remove the shaft lock retaining snapring, then carefully release the tool and remove the shaft lock from the column.

  6. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.

  7. For standard columns, remove the upper bearing spring and thrust washer.

  8. For tilt columns, remove the upper bearing spring, inner race seat and inner race.

  9. Move the turn signal lever upward to the "Right Turn" position.

  10. Remove the access cap and disengage the multi-function lever harness connector, then grasp the lever and pull it from the column.

  11. Loosen and remove the hazard knob retaining screw, then remove the screw, button, spring and knob.

  12. Remove the screw and the switch actuator arm.

  13. Remove the turn signal switch retaining screws, then pull the switch forward and allow it to hang from the wires. If the switch is only being removed for access to other components, this may be sufficient.

  14. If the switch is being completely removed, disengage the wiring at the base of the column. Attach a length of mechanic's wire to the switch harness connector, then pull the harness through the column, leaving the mechanic's wire in place for installation purposes.

On some vehicles access to the connector may be difficult. If necessary, remove the column support bracket assembly and properly support the column, and/or remove the wiring protectors.

  1. Remove the switch and wiring harness from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the switch and wiring harness to the vehicle. If the switch was completely removed, use the length of mechanic's wire to pull the switch harness through the column, then engage the connector.

If the column support bracket or wiring protectors were removed, install them before proceeding.

  1. Position the switch in the column and secure using the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 30 inch lbs. (3.4 Nm).

  2. Install the switch actuator arm and retaining screw, then tighten the screw to 20 inch lbs. (2.3 Nm).

  3. Install the hazard knob assembly, then install the multi-function lever.

  4. Install the thrust washer and upper bearing spring (standard columns) or the inner race, upper bearing race seat and upper bearing spring (tilt columns), as applicable.

  5. Lubricate the turn signal canceling cam using a suitable synthetic grease (usually included in the service kit), then install the cam assembly.

  6. Position the shaft lock and a NEW snapring, then use the lock compressor to hold the lock down while you seat the new snapring. Make sure the ring is firmly seated in the groove, then carefully release the tool.

  7. Install the shaft lock cover.

  8. Align and install the steering wheel.

  9. Make sure the ignition is OFF, then connect the negative battery cable.


1995-99 Vehicles

CAUTION These models are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Chapter 6 .

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Make sure that the turn signal switch is in the OFF (center) position.

  1. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Remove the steering wheel.

  2. Remove the two pan head tapping screws from the lower steering column cover, then tilt the cover down and slide it back to disengage the locking tabs.

  3. Remove the lower steering column cover.

  4. Using a Torx® screwdriver, remove the two Torx head screws from the upper steering column cover, then remove the cover.

  5. Remove the wire harness strap, then remove the two harness straps from the steering column wire harness.

  6. Remove the screw and disengage the steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wiring harness.

  7. Unplug the gray and black connectors of the switch from the steering column bulkhead connector.

  8. Remove the two pan head tapping screws.

  9. Grasp the lever/multi-function turn signal switch assembly, then remove it by carefully pulling it straight outward.

To install:

  1. Install the lever/multi-function turn signal switch assembly, using a small blade screwdriver to compress the electrical contact and move the assembly into position.

The electrical contact MUST rest on the canceling cam assembly.

  1. Connect the two pan head tapping screws, then tighten the screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).

  2. Attach the gray and black connectors of the switch to the column bulkhead connector.

  3. Connect the steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wiring harness.

  4. Connect the two wire harness straps to the steering column wire harness, then install the wire harness strap.

  5. Install the upper steering column cover, then using a Torx® screwdriver, connect the two Torx head screws to the upper column cover, tighten to 12 inch lbs. (1.4 Nm).

  6. Install the lower steering column cover, then connect using the two pan head tapping screws, tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).

  7. Make sure that the lever is in the OFF (center) position.

  8. Install the steering wheel.

  9. If equipped, install the horn pad.

  10. Activate the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. Connect the negative battery cable.


SERVICE PRECAUTIONS

  • When performing service around the SIR system components or wiring, the SIR system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded SIR system repairs.

  • When carrying a live inflator module, make sure that the bag and trim cover are pointed away from you. Never carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the underside of the module. In case of accidental deployment, the bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury.

  • When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface.


DISABLING THE SYSTEM
See Figures 2 through 7

  1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.

  2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, remove the key, then disconnect the negative battery cable.

  3. Remove the AIR BAG fuse from the fuse block.

  4. Remove the steering column filler panel or knee bolster.

  5. Unplug the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and yellow two way connector at the base of the steering column.

  6. On 1998-99 models, remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the passenger yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

  7. On 1998-99 models, unplug the yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

With the AIR BAG fuse removed, the battery cable connected and the ignition in the ON position, the AIR BAG warning lamp will be ON. This is normal and does not indicate a system malfunction.

ENABLING THE SYSTEM

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. On 1998-99 models, attach the yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

  3. On 1998-99 models, install the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) to the passenger yellow two way connector located behind the glove box.

  4. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK, then remove the key.

  5. Attach the two way connector at the base of the steering column and the Connector Position Assurance (CPA).

  6. Install the steering column filler panel or knee bolster.

  7. Install the AIR BAG fuse to the fuse block.

  8. Connect the negative battery cable.

  9. From the passenger seat, turn the ignition switch to RUN and make sure that the AIR BAG warning lamp flashes seven times and then shuts off. If the warning lamp does not shut off, make sure that the wiring is properly connected. If the light remains on, take the vehicle to a reputable repair facility for service.
