So I am having some trouble with my turn signal wiring on my 5.0 Mustang.
The car has been sitting for over a year and the ignition was recently replaced by my father who was too impatient to just get my key so he put a new ignition to move the car to another spot in his junk yard. I was not around when he did this so i'm unsure if it could have contributed to the problem but I'm suspicious because my turn signals worked fine before it sat.
I was able to narrow down the turn signal problem with the help of my Chilton's manual. The fuses were checked and flasher replaced and still had no luck.
I had the signals operating normally when I unbolted the turn signal switch from the column, I have checked the contacts inside the wiring harness and no issues. With the switch dangling the signals were working, so I bolted the switch back on and the signals were not operating again.
This time i took the switch off again and jiggled the wires that connect to my turn signal switch. In some positions the signals work and some positions they do not. (inconsistent positions for working/not working)I follow the wires with my hand and they end in what i think is the engine harness. I can feel them wrapped and what feels like gooey glue (I have not dropped the steering column to see).
I'm guessing I will need to further disassemble the steering column plastic covers and drop the steering column. But my question is what would cause the signals to work with the bunch of wires in one position and then after the slightest movement of these wires they do not? What causes a short or ground? How can i easily identify and fix the faulty wire?

Look at the back of the multi-function (turn signal)switch. See if you can pull any of the wires from the connectors. Ford had some problem with the locks breaking and allowing the wires to back out a little and cause your problem. If that is the problem, you can find the part at www.Motorcraft.com
