Turn Signal Too Quite - 2000 Xterra Sign In

I recently lost much of my hearing and can no longer hear the turn signal indicator on my 2000 Xterra (Super Charged with 210,000 Km.) Unfortunately, my height and the steering wheel position cause the dash turn signal indicators to be exactly behind the steering wheel. I cannot see the indicator lights while driving. I want to mount a small 12 volt, low power LED indicator in the center or the dash console panel, just to the right of the power outlet. I would then wire this to the turn signals

I'm wondering where is the best place to tap into the electrical system so that the LED will flash when either turn signal is on. I'm thinking about tapping directly into the circuit board of the flasher module. The flasher is Model No. "25731-1M200". Do you think my planned approach will work? It would avoid having to cut into any of the vehicle wiring. The circuit board inside the flasher module has a ground and two other connections from the relay. Can anyone tell me which two points I need to tap into to feed the LED or will I need to use two LEDS, one for each turn signal?

Does anyone have better ideas or suggestions. I thought about trying to find a louder flasher module but my wife already complains about the existing one being too loud. That's why I thought a dash mounted LED might be the best solution.

Thanks. Mardon

UPDATE: There were no suggestions posted, so I decieded to have a try at doing this myself. To my surprise it works fine. Instead of tapping into the circuit board on the flasher module, I made a foot long wiring harness to go betwen the socket on the flahser module and the plug that normally plugs into the flasher module. I then tapped into this short harness to feed the LED that I installed in my console. The console light now flashes for either turn signal and also for the hazard flasher. If you decided to try this though, you're on your own. I can't make any quarentee that it will work for anyone else. As far as I know, doing this might even damage some vehicles. It has solved my problem though. Here's a pic of the way I did it: http://www.JustPhotos.ca/post/flasher.jpg

I guess I missed this post but I really wouldn't have suggested anything different. Going at it the way you did was really the best way. You don't want to be opening up factory harnesses or splicing into wires unless you really have to.

I have to give you a thumbs up on the idea and the install...............Very clean job.......

You should make a kit and sell it on line........ Maybe there's a market for it......There was at least one guy looking for it....Wink

Thanks Sidom, At the same time, I also solved my wife's complaint about the turn signal being too loud. The clicker module was originally mounted on a metal tab connected to the dash. This was acting as a 'sounding board' to amplify the clicking noise. Since my wife found it too loud, and I couldn't hear it anyway, I did not reinstall the clicker module onto that tab but instead taped it to a wiring harness. This removed the sounding board effect and my wife says the sound level is much better for her ears now (not as loud). "Two birds with one stone" as they say. Sly
