Troubleshooting backup light on '97 BMW 840Ci Sign In

Hi guys,
I'm trying to get the driver's side backup light to illuminate on my newly purchased '97 BMW 840Ci.

The car tells me "LICENSE PLATE LIGHT FAIL" so I replaced both license plate lights - which were already lighting up - along with the trunk compartment lights and both backup light bulbs.

If I pop out the bulb housing and put it in the passenger side backup light, it still illuminates, so something is either messed up with the circuit overall or with something I can't find.

Any tips for troubleshooting a little deeper?

Thanks!

Did you check for power and ground in the socket?
