Trouble with transmission and car wont start? Sign In

Unsure
So here it goes... Really hope someone out there can help me.

Dodge Intrepid
3.3L
112,000 miles

So I live about an hour out side of Austin TX. Drove there this weekend and the problems began. i have had no problems before this (slipping or starting). After checking into our hotel I drove to walmart and on the way back it felt as if I had accidently hit me shifter into nuteral. it is automacic by the way. The engine reved up again as if I were in nuteral. I stoped checked the transmissions drove it to Autozone (in first gear 35 mph @ 2.5 RPM) and they checked out the fluid as well and nothing. Was all fine not dark, not burnt etc. I drove it back to the hotel where it stayed in the parking lot overnight. The next morning I tried to start it and nothing. My GPS was plugged in and on running off the AC power from the car but started wouldnt budge. There was a quiet ding ding ding sound almost as if i left the keys in after parking but now the normal sound and it was inconsistant. It would make the sound only about 20% of the times I put the key in and took it out to try and start the car. I asked a guy to help my try and jump it and it started right away. The car would still not shift however. Again I headed to Autozone and they said my battery was shot so I bought a new battery hoping it might solve my problem. In hindsite I should of know that was not the issue. Again the same shifting problem persisted. In desperation being in a city so far from home and with no $ I decided to take the lond trip back and yes in first gear. Car made it there fine in 2.5 hours instead of the hour it should of taken. The following day I made a few minor trips around town to a mechanic and walmart. The speedlimt is 40 around town so it was no biggie. No problems with starting the whole day. Today the same thing I took my girl to work and made a couple errands no prolems other than the shifting. I might add that when I first start to drive after an hour of it being parked it wants to try to shift into secone but goes to nuteral. this last for a few minutes and the it wont try to shift at all and stays in first and i could ride out first gear to redline if I wanted, just a side note. This was also consistant from when the problem first started. So tonight was the kicker. My sirlfriend stated the car to go to get some food tonight after 8 hours or so of it being parked and started great. After coming back out from the resturant again the same starting issue occured with the same weird faint dining noise. OMG this is so frusterating. Please if anyone has any clues let me know ASAP. Your help is much appreciated.

trader; This sounds like an internal transmission problem.Unsure Have you noticed any 'glitches' in the speedometer? A faulty VSS can cause eratic shifting. Also, if the engine isn't running properly. Being a '96, the "Check Engine" light should be on. If so, have the trouble code(s) retrieved and post them here.
