I have worked on cars since the early 90s as a automotive tech. Often, I would have to dig though the junction points to find a short to ground if fuse blows. What I am trying to find out, is there a faster way without taking wiring looms apart or diging under carpets ect.

My recent exeriance as a telco tech led me to thing using a telephone tonner would be the best and quickest way to trace the wire going from thefuse block to the relay. My internet connection at the customer side died so could not look up this in mitchel online.

The tonner idea did not work. Seems to work well tracing a tone though thousands of identical wires on a 66 block backboard, so why not automtive wiring.

Now, if anyone has done this idea, mabey you can share in it. How about using a thermal relay and with it clicking on and off with each current such, use the probe from a amp probe hooked to a dmm and wave it around the carpet or under the frame to trace the wire to the source of the short. Once the probe has moved past the source of the short, the DMM meter readings fall off. Now, is there a audiable short test tool with LED pointer that can do the same thing? This in my mind, would be much faster then looking up electrical wiring location and componet locations.

They already sell "shortfinder" tools that use a circuit breaker and an induction meter that is run along the harness and will peg the reading when you get close. In reality, they aren't much help

Here's what works for me . I have made several "test lites" using a side marker bulb . Straighten the contacts and solder on a couple of wires ,i make mine a couple feet long . I put various spade lugs , alligator clips and probe ends as needed ... I have one with a key buzzer for when you cant see the lite .I clip in a 5 amp breaker on one leg . A few ways of narrowing down the short or open are : take a small cheap compass and go down the bundle as the breaker goes on/off the compass will swing wildly at break. for shorts start at fartherest end of affected harness unplug connectors working to power source till lite goes out. After a couple of decades doing this you will develop a "sixth sense" for finding things. The automakers seem to make the same errors for generations.
