Temp. control lights blinking with beeping sounds Sign In

1996 Buick Park Avenue - 6 cylinder - 116K mileage

Pushing off button doesn't help. All the different controls - vent - rear defroster - windshield - will blink off and on with the corresponding beeping noise. Now the fan will come & AC on by itself.
My mechanic said I might need a new programmer. He doesn't seem to know how to fix it. The dealer said they'll charge $105 to look at it and these repairs tend to be expensive. I only paid $2000 for this car 2 months ago. I can't keep driving it with the beeping constantly going on and off. What do you think the problem is and will it be expensive to fix. Please explain in terms a person who is not a mechanic would understand - thanks!

Yes, you may need a new programmer but what i would try first is the remove the programmer and unplug it for about 10 minutes then plug it back in and try it again.

Re: Temp. control lights blinking with beeping sounds Sign In

I'm thinking that if I have my mechanic take the programmer out then put it back in and it still has the problem then I'm back where I started plus I have a bill for the labor. Plus I'll still have to pay again to have it repaired. My gut tells me the dealer will be super expensive, no matter what the issue is.
I found a re-manufactured programmer for this model for $117 on ebay with $5 for delivery - there's a bunch of them available. I'm thinking of just going with the lesser of 3 evils and just having my mechanic install the ebay one. What do you think of this idea? In other words, I can't pull that programmer myself, I don't know enough about it to do it. If I did, that would be the first option. Thanks.

Do whatever you want but there's a chance that thing will reset when the power is removed. There's also a chance that the stuff you buy from E-bay will be junk.

Still would reset what you have first and just hope for some flaming magic. I don't trust this Ebay thing AND asking a mechanic to install a part YOU acquired what to expect except that removes all responsibility of that mechanic of anything working out properly but IMO has every right to charge for the time spent,

if you want check the listing - guy sold 32 of them and has a store - not a single complaint - has 100% rating and refund policy - I know its not ideal, but this isn't a guy in his garage selling it. Not that it couldn't still be defective, it is ebay, I know.
This sounds like it could turn into my worst nightmare, the mechanic resets it, doesn't work. I agree the ebay may be sh-it then I'll have no option left but to go to the dealer and you know what that means. Nobody goes to the dealer to save money. I'll end up paying for my mechanic and the dealer which could end up being half the car's value for freaking beeps! AHHHH... The beauty of buying a used car...I think I'm out of options here.

Please take the link down to Ebay or it will be for you.

$2,000 bucks for a car that runs is still dirt cheap but a luxo model and those features become the pest and are expensive or a reason to bail out if too much too often. It's old and you still aren't sure of the source problem and might not know a good programmer from a bad one.

Your afraid of real techs and dealerships that can easily be the best bargain and choice both with more info at hand quickly.

Remember this is a '96 and the techno stuff it has was being designed many years before that. Not so sure why but a lot of stuff defaults to reset when power is removed and comes back.

I really don't know for sure and can't. For all I know this is a known warning idea for something else wrong entirely? If you have aftermarket stuff on this that comes into play too. Remote starters, alarms new or replacement radio/sound system hacked up and wrong wires tapped into all common areas for strange problems.

If for now just the "beeping" is driving you nuts find the dang thing and muffle it or unplug it,
