Tail and brake lights 2001 Chevy Prism	Sign In

Help me please. I have a 2001 Chevy Prism that the driver side tail light went out on. I replaced the bulb and now the tail light works fine, but when I push on the brake neither the tail or brake light on that side work. When I release the brake, the tail light goes back on. I can't figure it out.

If the tail light and brake light are in the same lens, you need a dual filament lamp (2057). If the brake light comes from a different lens you need a single filament lamp (2056). I would suggest removing the lamp you replaced to see if it is the correct one.

Thanks for the info, but I double checked and did use the 2057 LL. Any other suggestions?

With the light working when there is only one of the filaments turned on I’m thinking a bad ground at or near the socket.
What maybe happening is when the taillight is on by itself the taillight filament is back feeding to other filament in the bulb and then to ground in another part of the circuit, lighting the light. But once you turn on both the brake and tail the two powers feeding the two filaments cancel each other out.
Looking at the wiring diagram for this they share a common ground through the white/black wire.
A quick check would be take a jumper wire connected to a known good ground and touch the side of the bulb’s metal base. If everything lights up you know you’re on the right track.
The problem may be right in the socket; sometimes the metal tang that is suppose to touch the side of the bulb bends or breaks off during the bulb change.
