Strange sound when lights are switched on Sign In

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my 1997 Ford Mondeo Ghia GX. 2.0 ltr. 147,000 miles.
When I turn on the lights I get a strong whirring noise. It stays on regardless of where I set the switch. And it can be heard above the engine noise. It is there with the engine running or not.
Any ideas please?

Re: Strange sound when lights are switched on Sign In

Well isn't that special? I don't know the car specifically but that doesn't matter. I have a truck that once in a blue moon will buzz with headlights on??!! It quits it so I'll never find it till it stays doing it.

I'm convinced it's relay but can't know as said. Check you manual for relays for headlights and hope they give locations. Frequently they could be push in, in a fuse panel or just hanging somewhere up over your foot pedals. Chance they or it is/are underhood. If you can put your hand on it and sound changes I'd try a new one. Relays are usually metal points inside that touch when item is on and spring loaded to retract when off. One would think for headlights they would be acting funny or dim it that's it.

I can only guess at what's causing it for you,

T

As Tom pointed out, it's real hard to pinpoint without being there....

Check out his suggestion and maybe take a look at the alternator as well. Get a helper to turn the switch off & on to help see where the noise is coming from.

Thanks guys. I've found the problem. The headlight beam adjuster motor has jammed. I have disconnected it now so, although I can't move the headlights up and down, I don't have to put up with that noise.

Thanks for coming back with the fix. I couldn't have guessed without tons of Googling out there that this car had a motor involved with high beams.

Glad you are fixed up,

T
