Starter & charging problems Sign In

2000 Chevy S10 4Cyl. 2wd.
Out of the blue had it not start after stopping for a cup of coffee.
Would not start with a jump, charge on dash indicator looked ok, no other signs. Starter relay was clicking on but starter was not doing anything.
Came back to the truck several hours later and it started.
Pulled the starter had it tested and it just growled when power was put to it.
Changed out the starter, all good.

3 days later running as normal but the battery light comes on on the dash. Charge meter on dash shows about at 12v.
Luckily made it home.
Checked battery shows about 11.6V. Checked battery with truck running, had same voltage readings. Looks like an alternator problem, but not sure if it is related to the starter problem. Or is there a cable problem that is shorting somewhere.
With truck off voltage from positive post to ground on frame is the same as across battery terminals.
Put a charger on the battery for an hour or so and it seems to be charging ok, got a reading of over 12 V.

I would like to pull the alternator to test but of course it is buried under all kinds of stuff so it looks like a several hour job.

Any ideas, of other tests that someone knows of?????

Thanks,
Thackery

That's most likely a bad alternator. You much want to first check the inline fuse by checking for power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key off.
If you have power, the fuse is good and the alternator is likely bad.
