Start-Up Problem Sign In

well, that's my problem - my car won't start. first of all, i drive an old car. '77 Oldsmobile Omega. so naturally when it's the first start of the day, it takes a few times. so one day i turned the key, it "attempted" to start - it didn't, so i tried again. i turned the key back then turned it forward again too quickly and it made a very abrasive, high-pitched noise. now the engine won't even try to turn over when i try to start it. however, if i turn the key halfway i can still use all the electrical functions, i.e. interior lights, headlights, etc. but the engine won't start.

i can't really give a better description then that, but does anyone have an idea of what the problem may be?

The high pitched noise you heard was probably the starter drive grinding on the fly wheel. When you start now, does it attempt to turn over? or you get a click? or you hear nothing?

You might have the following problems
  • Starter drive teeth are worn, therefore it does not engage on the flywheel in turn starting your car.
  • Burnt out the armature in your starter
  • Burnt out the brushes in your starter
  • BURNT OUT YOUR STARTER!Unsure

Let me know what happens when you try and start your car. Or use this great step by step guide.

If it clicks, then there may be a power issue. But I am leaning more towards a burnt out componenets in the starter.
