Stalling problem fixed, I think? Sign In

I have a 2005 Kia Optima with 80,000 miles. I have had this problem where I have been at the stoplight and the car will stall. Last time this happened, it stalled at every stoplight and stop sign until I finally was afraid to drive it and I had it towed to the gas station. The man there said that it was the shift sensor that had gone bad. So he fixed it and I drove it home tonight. Funny that the dealer did not find that out. I had it taken to the dealer two times with this problem and they ran it through the computer and they could not figure out what was wrong with it. So I am just wondering if this was probably the problem and did the man fix it. Only time will tell. I will update this forum with more information.

If the PRNDL switch was bad and reporting to the PCM that it was in Park or Neutral all the time then this would make sense. The computer uses this to compensate the engine rpm according to its load. In park or neutral, there is no load on the engine. The PCM will run the idle air control motor in to lower RPM. If it saw park or neutral when the car was in gear, then the rpm would have not been bumped up to handle the load therefore the car would stall out while sitting.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on and I found out today from the mechanic that the throttle sensor was bad. So they are going to fix that today as well. I hope this is the end of things. He is the same mechanic that fixed the shifting sensor.
