Speedometer's dial does not go higher than 35 mph Sign In

I have a 1995 Nissan Quest with 270,000 miles on it. Lots of things replaced.
Two days ago I noticed that the speedometer does not go higher than
35 mph even when driving at interstate speed (70mph). When I stop, the dial
goes down slowly to 5mph. When I start driving, the same thing happens again.
Every other dial works fine (rev counter, fuel level, temp etc).
Please advise what might cause it, or should I just get a replacement
part on ebay? What is the correct name for that display? Thanking you.

Does it go to zero when you shut the engine off? If not, speedometer needs work. There are many companies that you can find on the internet that do speedometer repairs.

Thank you for your quick reply! Yes, it does go down to zero when the engine is shut off. I also noticed that the dial does NOT move according to the speed (goes up to 35mph fast, then when I stop the car, it slowly goes down to 5mph and stays there even when the car is stationary). So even though all the other dials work, do I need to buy the whole console? What is the correct name for that? Thanking you.

They call it an instrument cluster. The speedometer is serviceable, but it can only be done professionally by a licensed repair tech. You could probably buy one off ebay, but the mileage won't be the same. You could run into problems if you go to sell it.
