Speedometer stopped working Sign In

1992
GMC
Sonoma
4.3l
150,000 miles

I was hearing this clicking sound coming from the 4x4/2wd stick while it was in the 2wd selector.
The clicking stops and all the sudden the speedometer reads 0.
Is this something I can fix myself or do I need to go to a mechanic.

Thanks
Robert

mrclean; bump, bump. LOL. This vehicle uses a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) rather than a speedometer 'cable'. Usually, the VSS is the culprit with speedometer issues. But, doesn't explain the 'clicking' noise. Since I'm not a 'transmission' guy, I don't know if it uses a driven gear in the trans.Unsure I assume that you've tried changing the transfer case into different gears? 4L, 4H, and back to 2wd?

Re: Speedometer stopped working Sign In

thanks for the reply
since it was making noise i was wondering if it did have to do with a "gear" of some sorts.
I tried 4h and 2wd, but not 4L

Re: Speedometer stopped working Sign In

Yes the VSS is gear driven but has nothing to do with the tranny per say, though that is where it is located. It is a very simple check, from under the vehicle driver side of tranny about 6-8 inches in front of where drive shaft emerges there is a plug with a two wire connector, the piece that comes out of the tranny is about 2-2.5 inches in diameter with 1 10mm bolt holding a Y or U type clamp. remove the 1 bolt and clamp and pull out the gear sleeve VSS combo and check the gear that is on the end, if worn get replacement from dealer probably 5-10 dollars.BE CAREFUL WHEN PULLING GEAR ASSEMBLY THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLUID LOSS, MAY LOOK LIKE A LOT BUT NOT DANGEROUS UNLESS IT RUNS IN YOUR FACEUnsure. If gear is worn put your finger inside the hole where the gear sleeve was and feel for the drive gear on the tranny output shaft it could be worn also if it is it won't do any good to replace the driven gear, you should take to a good mechanic or transmission shop to have speedo drive and driven gears replaced, shouldn't be very expensive possibly in the 50-75 dollar range.

Re: Speedometer stopped working Sign In

oop, forgot to mention I fixed it.
for some reason the cables ran right next to a drive shaft joint.
The noise was the cables hitting up against the joint.
Then the cable came unplugged.
I just plugged it back in and stuffed it under some stuff so it wont do that again.
