Signal/taillight issue on 1999 Audi A4

Hi, I have a 1999 Audi A4 Quattro Turbo, 1.8L, 140K miles, and am having trouble with the turn signals. At times they have to be manually manipulated, but recently a new problem came up. The driver's side rear signal light will sporatically come on, but in steady, not flash mode, even tho the signal switch has not been engaged. This makes it look like a taillight is missing. The taillights are working, but seem dimmer since this started. I know that there have been issues related to a relay with the Audi A4s - could that be the issue causing the rear light to come on as well? Thanks for your help.

You may want to start looking at the ground circuits. If this is the style where you can pop out the sockets and they have the external metal clips, you may have either socket or board problems. German cars have used this style for many years and have always had problems with them. Steve
