Rear defrost and rear speakers dont work when its cold outside. Sign In

I have a 99 pontiac sunfire, and when it is cold outside, below 50 degrees or so, the rear window defrost and rear speakers stop functioning. Never has one worked and the other not, both are always out at the same time. I can park the car, leave it until its warm outside (the car is not running during this time) and all of a sudden they both work again. I am getting very frustrated with this, its not a major issue at the very moment but it is going to be as I am moving to Chicago from San Diego in a week and cannot afford to take the car in to a professional shop or dealership. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I’m not sure if the place and connector I’m going to be talking about has the rear speakers going to and through it; but I do know that this connector is a problem for the rear window defroster on a lot of Cavaliers and Sunfires.
Pull the driver’s side kick-panel’s carpeting down and about half way between the floor and the bottom of the dash you’ll see a wire connector with five or six wires.
One of these wires will be a purple wire; this is the wire from the rear defroster switch. For some reason this connection gets hot enough to melt the connector and eventually burn itself out and loose connection all together.
Have a look if it has melted; if so you can cut out the connector and reconnect the wires by using individual crimp on wire connectors.
One last thing the purple wire leading into this connector leaves as a black wire. Why GM thought they had to change colors is a mystery but I thought I would mention it to help you identify the connector.
Dan.
