The radiator fan in my 98 honda civic lx is not turning on.A mechanic i met did something to the relay and it turned the fan on but permanently, even if the ignition was off. I bought a new relay but it it is not turning the fan on.

You more than likely have a prob with the relay control circuits . The person who helped you prob bypassed the relay . I'm sure it was done as a temporary measure . Best bet is to go to a trusted shop . While it can be difficut to diagnose for the average car owner , a qualified tech should be able to fix in a resonable time. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

I was just told that it could be the temperature sensor for the radiator. What else do you think it could be? I'm trying to move up to somewhat above average car owner due to curiosity and financial reasons:)

Yes ,it could be or it could be wiring , fuse or fuseable link , the fan motor itself , in some cases the ECM controls the ground for the relay. be sure not to confuse the temp sender with the temp sensor. to start you will need a wireing diagram ,a Haynes or Chilton may have one . A meter, test light. And some reading time . If you want to take a poke and hope . The temp sensor is a good as any place to stsrt. LIFE'S SHORT GO FISH

That switch is on the back corner of the engine on the passenger side with green and white wires going to it. The way it works is it grounds the relay so you can test it by just connecting the 2 wires together or grounding the green wire. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
