Problem starting with new battery Sign In

2000
Toyota
Camry
4 cyl
100,00 miles

I just purchased a new battery for my Camry. At the time of purchase the charging system was checked and deemed to be okay. Almost immediately I had problems starting the car in the morning. I would turn it over and get no response (no sound at all...silence)...and then on the 3rd or 4th try it will start. In addition, this morning I noticed (while driving) that when I turned on the headlights, several of the lights on my instrument panel went out, and the the defrost fan diminished in power. Is this a bad battery? or something else?

It could be a battery but more likely is a connection problem somewhere in the power or ground cables for the battery.

You have 2 options: First, you could take the starter off, and replace the solenoid and replace the worn internal contacts. This is the lesser cost option. The contact wear issue is a very common failure; I change contacts in starters 2-3 times a week. The second option is to replace the starter.

I think just assuming you have a bad starter would be incorrect. First off, that would have nothing to do with with dash lights or heater fan going out when the headlights are turned on

Re: Problem starting with new battery Sign In

I've now noticed that the AC and REAR DEFROST lights that I thought had gone out when the headlights were turned on,
actually just dimmed...the defrost fan doesn't stop...but it noticeably diminishes in power. The same thing actually happens
in my '94 Corolla...so this may have nothing to do with my problem.
After several days of no starting problems...the problem returned again today...turned the key several times with no response (no clicking...no noise at all...
silence)...then on the fifth or sixth try, it turns right over and starts....ALSO, This problem is only occuring when the car is
cold (first thing in the morning...or after sitting at work all day in cold weather)...After driving it in the morning, I'm not having problems
on subsequent "starts" during the day...One more piece of info, when I turn the key to the "on" position, everything lights up (like normal)...it's
just when I turn to "start" that the failure occurs....THANKS to both Hammer Time and poonamt93 for the imput. Your help is really appreciated!

You could have a bad starter but you going to have to test for power arriving on the small wire when the key is held in "start" position. You can try jumping power right to that terminal to test the starter during the failure.
